What is wind and how is it generated?
In theory wind and solar energy are linked. The surface of the earth is heated by the heat radiating from the sun. However some parts of the earths surface heat at different rates than others due to land and water absorbing heat at different rates or temperature differences between day and night. Hot air naturally rises .This in turn reduces the atmospheric pressure at the earths surface .Cold air is drawn in to replace the air that has risen thus creating wind. The kinetic energy (energy created when mass is in motion) can be used to create electricity.
How long do turbines last ?
Wind turbines typically last for 15 – 20 years, during this time some parts may need replacing, as with a car.
What can turbines be used for ?
Domestically small turbines can be used for battery charging, water/ air heating and grid tie in installations.
